By the time I finished explaining my dream, Nev’s mouth was hanging open and her eyes were as wide as golf balls. “COOL!” She exclaimed. “COOL?! But, what if it was actually real?” I said quietly. She looked at me and laughed. “Really, Shy? That’s impossible. We don’t have powers. And were nothing special.” She said. I looked down. “No offense, of course.” She added, holding up her hands. Still looking down, I muttered, “Right.” I then stood up. “Wanna fix breakfast?” I asked. Nevaeh nodded and followed me downstairs. Once we got downstairs, I
entered kitchen. I noticed a note on the fridge. It read:
Food’s in the fridge and Pantry.
I nodded and turned to Nevaeh. “What’s for breakfast?” She asked as she sat down at the bar. I walked over to the pantry and stared at the little ingredients we had. “Well… looks like we have enough stuff to make pancakes…” I said not quite confidently. She walked over beside me and stared at the near-empty pantry. “Why don’t we just have Pop-tarts?” She laughed and raised her eyebrows. I stared at her disapprovingly. “Fine. Breakfast the easy way…” I muttered.
After breakfast we got ready and went into the living-room to decide what we were going to do for the first day of Summer vacation.
“Why don’t we go to the park?” I suggested. Nevaeh pondered this.
“OK!” She exclaimed quickly. We both laughed and got our things so we could leave. While I was locking the door behind me, I saw a man walking a dog and I smiled. I loved animals. I turned back to the keyring in my hand then suddenly did a double-take to the man I had saw on the sidewalk. I finished locking the door, and turned to Nevaeh.
“Nev! That’s the man from my dream!” I whispered. She looked around until she saw the man that was now about to sit on a bench and read a newspaper he had in his hand. Nevaeh had a puzzled look on her face.
“Funny…” She muttered “When you described him, I imagined him a little bit paler. And taller…”
“Never mind, that!” I replied. “Well… what do you wanna do? Go up there and ask him about your ‘powers’?” She teased. I bit my lip.
“No… but I wanna follow him..”
The first thing I did was look to see what time it was. 6:47. Yesterday had been the last day of school. Which meant today was the first day of summer vacation. Since it would make no since in going back to sleep, I got up and walked over to the futon that held my sleeping best-friend, Nevaeh. Not wanting to wake her up, though knowing I had to, I gently shook her. Then awaiting for a blow to hit my face (she had serious reflexes) I shut my eyes and turned away. When I didn’t get punched, I looked down at her again and said softly, “Nev. Nevaeh, wake up…” She stirred but did not wake. Losing my patience, I smiled. “NEV GET YOUR BUT UP! IT’S SUMMER VACATION!!!!” I yelled. Was I worried I’d wake someone else up? No. My mom, dad, and brother (Chase) had left for the summer to stay in Florida. They trusted me enough to leave me alone THE WHOLE SUMMER. Pretty cool if I do say myself. Finally, Nevaeh awoke and said angrily, yet groggily, “EXACTLY. SUMMER VACATION. YA HEAR THAT, SHY?! V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N. Meaning, TIME OFF FROM THAT PRISON.” I laughed. We always said that McKinley High was like a prison (Food included). Shaking my head and remembering my dream, I said “Nev, I had the weirdest dream last night…” Her eyes flashed open and suddenly she was sitting up. Her eyes wide with anticipation to hear my dream, I started to tell her what I had dreamt about.
My nightmare started like this. I was running through what looked like abandoned city. All around me buildings were burning and debris was falling everywhere. The air was filled with thick smoke and was clouded with pollution. Just then I dodged a piece of what must have been an old desk. I jumped over an over-turned car. That’s when I made a mistake. I turned around. Behind me was a gigantic monstrosity. (literally) Taller than the Empire State Building, this monster shook the ground vigorously as it took a semi-truck in hand and threw it in the opposite direction. Shaking, I turned back around and ran as fast as I could. The creature behind me suddenly made a horrible shriek so loud I was sure people all over the world could here it. I kept running until I came to the forest edge. Not thinking, I ran in. I weaved in and out of trees, occasionally the shirt I was wearing got snagged by loose branches. I saw a clearing up ahead and ran faster. The clearing was huge. There was a garden, a lake, several other buildings and lastly a glorious light painted house. It was three-story, with a wrap-around porch. Hearing the creature shriek again, I ran towards the house. The door as ajar, so I went right in. I was surprised to see a man sitting at a long table. He was sitting at the head. I managed an “Um..” He looked up, as if he hadn’t noticed me. He smiled. He had short black hair with a few streaks of gray and a short beard. He was wearing battle armor. With a full-fledged chest-plate and sword hanging at his side. “Ah, my dear. I have been waiting for your arrival.” He said in a deep, yet calming voice. I felt my eyebrows furrow. “Ah, but of course. How could I have forgotten?” He said, but I had a feeling he had asked a rhetorical question. “Shyanna LeRae Connors, you and your friend, Nevaeh Paige Stone, are very special. How? Well, I’m afraid revealing this to you in a dream is far too dangerous. You must meet me and my other pupils here. We will teach you how to harness your powers, while keeping you safe.” He explained.
“Special? Powers? How do you know my name?” I blurted out. He smiled once again and replied, “So curious. Your questions will be answered when we meet.”
“Meet? But.. I don’t know where this is.” I looked at him suspiciously.
“You’ll know.” He said simply. I shook my head and opened my mouth to speak but all he said was, “You must awaken.” And with a wave of his hand, I jerked awake in a cold sweat lying in my bed.
